  4. Part of Lincoln's pivotal "house divided" speech will be
  5. auctioned

  8.     Abraham Lincoln holographs appearing on the auction block
  9. these days are likely to be routine memos from the 16th President
  10. -- a postmaster's appointment or some such. Much rarer is a
  11. Lincoln paper in his own hand on a key political issue. Sotheby's
  12. in New York City announced that in December it will auction off
  13. just such a document -- a draft of the pivotal "house divided"
  14. speech of 1858. A portion of the text is inscribed across a
  15. 12-in. by 7-in. sheet of paper that had been hanging on a wall
  16. in the home of a descendant of a Lincoln in-law.

  18.     The address, delivered on June 16, when Lincoln was
  19. nominated as a senatorial candidate in Illinois to oppose
  20. Democrat Stephen Douglas, made headlines. What Lincoln said in
  21. Springfield -- that a nation half slave, half free was not
  22. permanently tenable -- proclaimed his no-compromise stand.

  24.     Now that the handwriting is off the wall, it may bring as
  25. much as $500,000 at auction. It may also underscore how
  26. important it is to have everything in writing -- a reminder that
  27. might have spared Ronald Reagan some embarrassment. In his
  28. speech to the Republican National Convention, Reagan
  29. misattributed to Lincoln maxims actually written by a 20th
  30. century Presbyterian clergyman.
